Who wants to watch some women's football this summer? We do!
Hello we are Charlotte and Claire, followers of the Lionesses, Chelsea Ladies season ticket holders, huge Man City Women fans and all round supporters of any team. Since the World Cup in Canada we have followed every twist of the WSL and attended as many domestic and international matches as we can to show support for Women's football. This is a brilliant but time consuming pastime, not because of the travelling (who can forget our journey to Rotherham!), instead the lack of information or marketing about games has proved difficult to find the correct details to attend. Once again we find ourselves in the same situation. The Women's Euro's are coming up and can we find anywhere we can gather a group of friends to watch it? No! So we are aiming to get some pubs in London to show the games. If you are interested please read on....
This year, in the Netherlands, the UEFA Women's Championships (a.k.a the Women's Euros) will take place with all matches being shown on Channel 4. As it stands, the England team are positioned fourth in the FIFA World rankings, and the third highest team in Europe. This is the highest placing of any England Senior team since the men won the World Cup in 1966. What's more, people are watching women's football: the UK audience for the Women’s World Cup more than doubled from 5.1 million in 2011 to 12.4 million in 2015, and 1.9 million tuned into to watch one of the England Euro qualifying matches last year.
So even in the light of those impressive stats, after MUCH research we have been unable to find even one venue showing one game let alone all the games. We are writing to many of the sports pubs and chains in London, imploring them to show some of the matches in some pubs (and advertise this!). This discrepancy between the all consuming coverage of the men's team and the little coverage of the women's should be addressed, making the likes of Houghton, Scott and Bronze household names on a par with Kane, Dier and Cahill and allowing us to celebrate women's sport with the same national pride. Hopefully between our emails and this blog we can find some places to have a G&T while supporting the brilliant Lionesses. Because let’s face it, this is probably one of England's best chances to win a major tournament and we should be celebrating that in the Great British Way; with a drink!
